Realizada esta operación se sacaba la pipa del molde y se ponía a secar al sol. Conseguida una cierta consistencia se procedía a rematar la pipa, es decir, quitarle rebarbas. Es entonces cuando se sacaba la aguja de la caña, y se volvía a poner al sol para su definitivo secado.

The clay used, kaolin, came from the San Luis iron mine in Calle Miravillas in Bilbao. This clay was tipped into a pit and stirred together with water. Then it was left to dry for a while. The clay was then placed on a table and beaten with an iron bar until it reached the consistency of lard. Finally it was kneaded by hand. A piece of clay was then roughly drawn into the shape of a pipe, and a stainless steel needle was stuck into the stem. With the needle still inside, the pipe was placed in a two-part steel mould, which was then placed in a press, which applied pressure to the mould. With the pipe in the mould and the press, the hole in the bowl was made using a punch. The pipe was then removed from the mould and left to dry in the sun. Once it had attained a certain consistency the pipe was trimmed to remove any lumps of clay. The needle was then removed from the stem, and the pipe was put out in the sun to dry again.

La terre employée, le kaolin, provenait de la mine de fer de San Luis, dans la rue Miravillas de Bilbao. Ce genre d'argiles était jeté dans un puits et l'on ajoutait de l'eau en les battant jusqu'à les diluer. Ensuite, on laissait sécher un certain temps. Puis plaçant cette argile sur une table, on la battait à l'aide d'une barre de fer jusqu'à lui donner une consistance "semblable au saindoux". Enfin, on procédait à son pétrissage à la main. On prenait alors un morceau de terre auquel on donnait la forme approximative d'une pipe, en introduisant ensuite une aiguille en acier tout au long du tuyau. L'aiguille à l'intérieur, on mettait le projet de pipe dans un moule en acier composé de deux parties, et celui-ci à son tour dans une presse qui emprisonnait le moule. La pipe se trouvant à présent à l'intérieur du moule et de la presse, au moyen d'un poinçon on ouvrait le creux du fourneau. Une fois réalisé cette opération, on sortait la pipe du moule et on la mettait sécher au soleil. Quand on avait obtenu une certaine consistance, on procédait à la finition de la pipe, c'est-à-dire, à lui ôter les bavures. Alors seulement on retirait l'aiguille du tuyau, et l'on remettait à sécher au soleil pour le séchage définitif.
