وأوضح المتحدث الرسمي للهيئة العامة للإحصاء تيسير المفرج بأنَّ هذا التحديث يأتي ضمن الإجراءات التي تعمل عيلها الهيئة استعدادًا للتعداد السكاني القادم في 2020  والذي سيكون لأول مرة تعداد تسجيلي ، وأبان  المتحدث الرسمي للهيئة : بأنَّ التحديث الذي تقوم به الهيئة في منطقتي المدنية المنورة وتبوك لا يعد تعداد سكاني منفصل أو تعداد جديد  بل هو ضمن الأعمال الإحصائية التي تجريها الهيئة لتجربة  آليات لتعداد التسجيلي القادم  ، فالتحول من التعداد التقليدي إلى التعداد التسجيلي يتطلب إنجاز عدد من المتطلبات وهو ما عملت عليه الهيئة خلال الفترة الماضية حيث أنهت الربط الإلكتروني بمركز المعلومات الوطني والبريد السعودي ( العنوان الوطني )  ، وفي سبيل التحقق من نجاح عمليات الربط قررت الهيئة العامة للإحصاء إجراء عدد من الأعمال الإحصائية المشابهة للتعداد القادم قبل تاريخه المعتمد للتعرف على الثغرات والفجوات قبل بدء العد الفعلي حيث قامت الهيئة  في بداية العام الميلادي الحالي 2017 بإجراء أول تجربة للربط الإلكتروني بالعنوان الوطني في أحد المسوح التي تمت ، واستمرارًا لهذه الأعمال اختارت  الهيئة العامة للإحصاء منطقتي المدينة المنورة وتبوك لإجراء مسح شامل للسكان وتحديث مناطق العد  بنفس الآليات التي سيتم استخدامها في التعداد القادم 2020 .
