El descobriment és rellevant perquè suposa un avenç contra els organismes resistents als antibiòtics, que obliguen a les farmacèutiques a buscar-ne contínuament de nous. Segons l’Organització Mundial de la Salut (OMS) l'aparició de resistències es veu afavorida per l'abús en el consum dels antibiòtics. Des de fa uns trenta anys, les empreses han descobert que el fons marí produeix moltes substàncies que es poden acabar convertint en fàrmacs. Tal i com han explicat els científics implicats en la recerca, "reproduir al laboratori productes de la natura té una doble justificació. Una és mediambiental, per protegir les espècies que allotgen les substàncies d’interès farmacològic. I l’altra, és comercial, ja que produir un medicament a gran escala només és viable si està garantit el seu desenvolupament industrial".
