But Shyamola’s story has a comparatively happier ending, and she has managed to turn her life around thanks to a partnership between UNDP and the United Kingdom’s Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction.

CID training, in addition to speaking about mental health disorders, focuses on talking and taking the time to assess the situation, which is exactly what Thomson did. "And I just kept talking," says Thomson. "I used the de-escalation techniques and he put down the knife."

But perhaps Ry, the quietest of the bunch, summed it up best. “Mate,” he says, slowly, the Northwest Australian drawl dragging out his words. “Searching is what I live for. It’s what I’ve had embedded in me from a young age. I don’t think I’ll ever give up the feeling of not knowing what’s around the next corner.”

Steve was unable to financially support our family. He was unable to feel or express love and eventually became unable to nurture relationships. This man with many friends suddenly had none. He continually found fault with me.

“We came to this city looking for a better life but my husband Jamal struggled to find work and ended up pulling a cycle-rickshaw. When I got pregnant and gave birth to a daughter, he wasn’t happy,” Shyamola says.

Let me just ask you this. I'm just curious. You may or may not want to get into this, and I don't know how relevant it is to the committee--if it is not relevant, perhaps we can move on. I wonder if this provision caused, in some part, the reversal of intentions from a lot of the MPs. You at one time had unanimous support for the bill, and then ultimately it was defeated. Do you have any comments as to exactly what occurred and why, and why the about-face so rapidly?

The APC driver said he was aware that there were members of both the Enemy and the Friendly Force along the side of his route, but he did not notice nearly hitting the two Enemy Force members. As a result, he continued along the road not realizing that MCpl Wheeler was lying on the ground in front of him, ultimately running over him. He told the RCMP:

Manitoba’s longest-running French-language weekly, La Liberté was founded by Adélard Langevin, Archbishop of St. Boniface, and first appeared May 20, 1913. A crusading newspaper, La Liberté was the voice of the French-speaking population of Manitoba and defender of its linguistic and religious rights, forcing its principal rivals, Le Manitoba and Le Soleil de l’Ouest, to eventually cease publication. Still published today, its focus is on news and information for the province's francophones.

The Czech rider had qualified in 16th position and was able to progress forward in the wet. Abraham had been part of an exciting six-rider battle and was dicing with Hiroshi Aoyama for seventh position, when he made a mistake and crashed into the gravel. He was able to continue, but was left rueing the error, after several riders in front of him later fell off. The 21 year old potentially missed out on a fourth position, which was claimed by Aoyama at the chequered flag, but was pleased to pick up his second successive set of points in his debut MotoGP campaign, after difficult circumstances in the Jerez race.

The Tribunal found that prior to making the decision to close [the Diagnostic Centre], the District did not undertake a needs-based analysis, consider what might replace [the Diagnostic Centre], or assess the effect of the closure on severely learning disabled students. The District had no specific plan in place to replace the services, and the eventual plan became learning assistance, which, by definition and purpose, was ill-suited for the task. The philosophy for the restructuring was not prepared until two months after the decision had been made (paras. 380-382, 387-401, 895-899). These findings of fact of the Tribunal are entitled to deference, and undermine the District’s submission that it discharged its obligations to investigate and consider alternative means of accommodating severely learning disabled students before cutting services for them. Further, there is no evidence that the District considered cost-reducing alternatives for the continued operation of [the Diagnostic Centre]. [Emphasis added; para. 143.]

I have found that often the cultural tides will change on one prominent case. Oshima's was a high profile death and a high profile court case. Oshima began working at the Dentsu advertising agency at the beginning of that horrible decade of economic downturn and he worked extremely hard no days off, clocking over 100 hours a week for two years. At some point, he basically began to lose his mind and he eventually took his own life. His parents believed that there was a connection between him being overworked and his death so they launched a lawsuit. It got a lot of press because there was a predecessor to this in the 80's which was called 'death from overwork,' where people would die at their desk after working long hours. So the press got hold of the Ichiro story and called it 'suicide from overwork.' The court case and the discussion that happened around it began to connect depression and suicide. For Westerners it would seem bizarre that that connection had not yet been made because we think of them as inextricably linked. However, in Japan there is a storied tradition of suicide for honour, suicide for change, or for all sorts of other reasons. It is largely considered an act of personal will and not an expression of a mental illness or depression.
