“The London Olympics organisers have now pledged to act on this report and we welcome that. But unless the IOC acts as well, workers making mascots and other merchandise for future Olympics will once again be on poverty wages and have to sweat even harder than the athletes who will compete. The IOC has taken some small steps but these have clearly not been enough. Therefore we have written to IOC President Jacques Rogge asking him to meet and discuss the way forward,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow.

In its investigation, Associated Press found that in at least six cases involving 10 workers, the government cited trade secrets as the reason to withhold the information. Worker accounts also revealed the use of child labour as well as offers of bribes to keep people silent.

The two dotted lines, which form a wedge, indicate the contribution agriculture could make to reducing carbon by various incentive programs: incentives to increase the amount of reduced tillage, reductions in some inputs. There is a considerable buffer there where agriculture can actually contribute more than its share in reduction.

The Charter limits temporary work to 5 per cent of the workforce and guarantees equal pay and equal treatment.

Cultivation of the soil is a cultural practice available to producers for the reduction of grasshopper populations. Using tillage to control grasshoppers has to be considered carefully, especially under drought conditions. Tillage controls grasshoppers primarily by eliminating the green plants on which grasshoppers feed. The practice is of little value if used for the sole purpose of physically destroying grasshopper eggs or exposing them to desiccation, predation birds and other predators. Excessive tillage is harmful in that it will reduce soil moisture levels and increase the risk of soil erosion.

"Dr. Reaume's presentation was infused with a deep respect and passion for telling the stories of the patients who inhabited 999 Queen Street in Toronto," commented Sonya Nigam, Executive Director of the Human Rights Research & Education Centre, which co-sponsored the lecture. "He spoke about the awareness and sense of injustice of the patients and their families in relation to the former 'lunatic asylum's' use of unpaid patient labour for washing, cooking, cleaning, sewing and grounds work, particularly the building of the wall surrounding the institution."

Many governments have adopted measures to facilitate part-time employment, even encouraging employers to hire part-timers in countries where unemployment is high. Such measures may target discrimination faced by part-time workers and reduce the fixed costs associated with part-time employment, in some cases even to the point of making it more attractive to employers than full-time work. But where these policies fall down is in generalizing from measures that help individual workers and employers to a national employment policy to increase the number of part-time jobs as a solution to unemployment; in a sense, this just amounts to a redistribution of work.

114.     Some problems are unresolved despite the joint endeavours of governmental, international and voluntary organizations. Hence, the use of child labour and delinquency among children suffering from parental neglect may be regarded as negative factors.

To generate income and market access, poor households (IDPs and hosts) have intensified the use of agricultural labor and the sale of wood or charcoal compared to normal. Continued food assistance in the Far-North (distribution of complete food and cash rations by WFP and ICRC) reaches 41 percent of the population (refugees, IDPs, and hosts) facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes. The assistance contributes to Stressed (IPC Phase 2!) outcomes throughout the region.

Belron outlaws the use of child labour in any form. It does not employ anyone below the age of 16 or the local legal minimum employment age should this be different in a country it operates in. It will not use suppliers who use child labour. The working conditions of all of its employees, contractors and suppliers must be compliant with national legislation and in cases where this is deemed insufficient, with the relevant International Labour Organisation Standards. In no instance will inhumane treatment of its employees or those in its supply chain be acceptable, including any form of forced labour, physical punishment or other abuse.

Eritrean growth in recent years has been driven by mineral resources, especially with the commencement in February 2011 of commercial mining and exports of gold and silver at the Bisha mine. Other notable mineral deposits in Eritrea include copper, zinc, nickel and chromite. By 2016, the Colluli Potash Project is expected to be up and running. The contribution of agriculture to the economy is minimal, though the sector engages about 80% of the workforce. In addition, Eritrea’s suitable endowments in fisheries and livestock development have been underutilised. Amongst the overall concerns, the following stand out: unlimited and underpaid national service; use of forced labour; drought and other natural disasters; persistent hostilities with two of its neighbouring countries over unsettled border disputes; a misalignment of the exchange rate resulting in foreign-exchange shortages; and an unfavourable investment environment. The government has recognised some of these impediments and has implemented piecemeal reforms since 2008 to address the issues, including the establishment of a free-trade zone in Massawa and the implementation of the ASYCUDA ++ system, the initiation of a privatisation programme. Overall, the introduction of macroeconomic policy and institutional reforms directed to promoting the role of the private sector and to the development of human skills is a prerequisite to unlock Eritrea’s economic potential.

"L'enfance est une période dans la vie qui devrait être consacrée à l'éducation et à la formation, non au travail ; par sa nature et par les conditions de travail dans lesquelles il se fait, le travail des enfants compromet la possibilité qu'ont les enfants de devenir des adultes productifs et utiles dans la société ; finalement, le recours au travail des enfants n'est pas inévitable, et le progrès vers son élimination s'avère possible partout où il y a la volonté politique de s'y opposer avec détermination";
