For those who know a little about the 1812 period, to those who know a lot, Fort George is an excellent introduction and examination of social history, at Sir Isaac Brock's military headquarters in Upper Canada. The site tour of Fort George is a glimpse into the social history of a garrison that was built to protect the first capital of Upper Canada, as well as the narrow supply route to the Great Lakes west of lake Ontario. During the War of 1812, Fort George was bombarded, burned, assaulted and then occupied for seven months by American forces. As the Americans retreated in December of 1813 they burned the town. In retaliation, Fort George was used as the base for the night assault and capture of Fort Niagara and the burning of the American side of the river south to Buffalo. In 1814 the American army returned to Niagara with confrontations from Fort Erie to Fort George and battles at Chippawa, Lundy's Lane, and the siege of Fort Erie. Although little changed geographically at the end of the war, the hardships of soldiers and civilians alike during the war very much forged the two separate identities of the United States and Canada.
