It was by way of a translation from the United States—on the initiative of the New York editor Blanche Knopf (1894-1966), who promoted the work of many French intellectuals—that English speakers in Europe gained access to the book. Its translation was entrusted to Howard Parshley (1884-1953), a retired professor of zoology, specialist in reproduction, and eminent critic of books about sex. At the initiative of the publishers, who were mindful of helping the average reader, and with little help from de Beauvoir, who disregarded his correspondence, he stripped the text of its philosophical content.

The lectures in this orientation course are strongly focused on research projects within the field of zoology and plant biology conducted in molecular biology on animal and plant model systems (C. elegans, Drosophila, zebrafish, mouse, Arabidopsis and Petunia). In addition to the conventional strategies in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and cell biology, the spectrum of experimental methods also encompasses other modern techniques, such as fluorescence and confocal microscopy, «high throughput» DNA sequencing and analysis of results with bioinformatic methods, purification and analysis of protein complexes and mass spectroscopy, PCR and the production of transgenic microorganisms, plants or animals.

This guide, intended to help support field surveys, was produced with support from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and jointly with the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN). Dr. Donald McAlpine, New Brunswick Museum Research Curator of Zoology and the instigator of the project observes that “the New Brunswick Museum houses the largest freshwater mussel collection in the Maritimes and together NBM and CMN staff have published extensive research on this group of organisms. Given these strengths, the New Brunswick Museum and Canadian Museum of Nature staff were the obvious ones to undertake the production of this guide.”

The Mes family tradition continues to live on today. Several of the Mes siblings’ spouses and children are also graduates of the University of Ottawa with degrees as diverse as geology, music and engineering. John and Margaret’s family is now in its fourth generation and we can rest assured that it will too leave its mark on our campus. Jos Mes’ family, John’s youngest brother, is currently attending the University; his grandson, Cory Mes, and his daughter-in-law, Julie Mes, are having their turn at adding their own chapters to their family’s rich history.

Also interested in biology and zoology, he carried out research into chitin, one of the substances making up the exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects. He then spent over 40 years working for the Sandoz Corporation in Basel, until his retirement in 1971. In 1943 he discovered the hallucinogenic effects of LSD.

All of this is hardly surprising, not only in light of the dubious history of the concept of hybridity, which implicates botany, zoology and, somewhat later, theories of race from the 18th and 19th century [2], and thus an affiliation with ideas and practices of breeding, crossbreeding and social technologies, to which the opposition of "retaining purity" and "mixing" was just as central as a systematic identification intention, which did not, in fact, exclude the "hybrid". Nor is it a coincidence that the concept of hybridity - which is used in more recent theorizing specifically against racist proscriptions - has developed primarily in discourses about "culture". It has often been noted that discourses about culture(s) refer less to given - somehow natural - identities, but instead posit a schematism of identity (identities), which ultimately leaves the determination of collective identity void, but only to focus almost obsessively on figures of cultural identification - in fact, even to generate these.

Kandinsky’s use of biomorphic forms attests to his fascination with the organic sciences, particularly embryology, zoology, and botany. During his Bauhaus years, Kandinsky had clipped and saved illustrations of microscopic organisms, insects, and embryos. He also owned several important scientific books and encyclopedias, from which he derived abstracted depictions of minute creatures as exemplified in

The sponges correspond to one of the oldest zoological groups as it appeared during the early Cambrian, about 570 million years ago. During the ExBoDi cruise, we found some sphinctozoan sponges. This group of calcified sponges, considered as very ‘archaic’, used to form calcareous edifices similar to current coral reefs.
