Ziel der genossenschaftlich organisierten Bauherrschaft war es, mit den Einkünften aus der Vermietung der Liegenschaft den Betrieb der ersten öffentlich zugänglichen Volkssternwarte der Schweiz sicherstellen zu können. Das Observatorium in der Turmkuppel konnte am 15. Juni 1907 eröffnet werden. Das Fernrohr, das mit seinem farbkorrigierenden Zweilinsensystem von 30 cm Durchmesser und 500 cm Brennweite bis zu 600fache Ver­grösserungen ermöglicht, war bei der Firma Carl Zeiss in Jena bestellt worden. In den 1920er Jahren erlebte die Sternwarte eine wahre Blütezeit. Doch in den Jahren der Weltwirtschaftskrise drohte der Sternwarte nicht nur die Schliessung, sondern beinahe auch der Abbruch des Turms. Auf Anregung der Zürcher Volkshochschule wurde 1936 die «Gesellschaft der Freunde der Urania-­Sternwarte» gegründet, welche sich zur Deckung des Defizites verpflichtete. Noch heute ist die Zürcher Volkshochschule Schirmherr des populären Observatoriums.

Vicina al designer, sarà lui a disegnare l’abito da sposa che la top model ha indossato durante la cerimonia per il suo matrimonio. Non dimenticando il marchio che porta il suo cognome, Galliano produce abiti e accessori che riprendono le grafiche della carta stampata. Caratteri simili a quelli che lo scorso 2011 riportano sui maggiori quotidiani del mondo e non solo, la pratica di licenziamento avviata da parte di Dior ai danni dello stilista, a causa degli insulti antisemiti, che Galliano aveva pronunciato nei confronti di un gruppo di ragazzi. Questa sgradevole vicenda però non può oscurare il grande lavoro che il “pirata della moda” ha praticato negli anni. Un lavoro che l’ha portato a ricevere per ben quattro volte il premio come Stilista britannico dell’anno nel 1987, 1994, 1995 e 1997.
