En 2011, la croissance économique de l’Érythrée a été vigoureuse grâce à des investissements substantiels dans des projets miniers, en particulier dans la mine d’or de Bisha. C’est principalement la production de cette mine et des mines d’argent, de cuivre et de zinc qui devrait tirer l’expansion du pays en 2012 et 2013. Néanmoins, dans un avenir proche, la croissance ne sera probablement pas aussi forte qu’en 2011, car il faut s’attendre à une baisse des cours des ressources minérales. Le lourd déficit budgétaire en 2011 devrait continuer de diminuer en 2012, mais aussi en 2013. En 2011, d’après les estimations, l’Érythrée a affiché une inflation à deux chiffres. Celle-ci pourrait se replier légèrement si les améliorations attendues de la production agricole se matérialisent, mais elle restera élevée. La balance des opérations courantes s’est améliorée grâce à la progression des recettes tirées des exportations de ressources minérales. Elle restera probablement légèrement excédentaire à moyen terme, surtout si le cours de l’or demeure stable. Pour l’avenir, la position de l’Érythrée vis-à-vis des problèmes de sécurité dans la région, et tout particulièrement ses relations avec son grand voisin, l’Éthiopie, pourrait l’obliger à entretenir une importante infrastructure militaire. La préservation de la forte croissance enregistrée en 2011 dépendra du risque de famine et de l’insécurité alimentaire, de la découverte de vastes gisements de minéraux dans plusieurs zones du pays, de l’ampleur des investissements étrangers dans l’exploitation de ces sites et des relations de l’Érythrée avec la communauté internationale, y compris avec la Chine.
