One quarter of drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2008 were driving aggressively, including driving too fast for road and weather conditions, running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and failing to yield the right of way.

“Just because we’re the management doesn’t mean we always know best and our bodies aren’t doing it eight hours a day!” says Tamara Mathies, who is also taking occupational health and safety studies part-time through the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Bennett recalls one visit to the nursery, when she noticed workers riding around in a self-propelled cart with big wheels. They were using it to prune low foliage in place of bending over and doing it by hand. Bennett points out that working bent over for an extend period of time poses a considerable risk of musculoskeletal injury. The staff at Cannor Nurseries knew it too. So they approached the safety committee with their cart idea.“The Mathieses were willing to say ‘let’s try something different,’ not because they had to do it. But they pretty much eliminated that risk completely…and the workers initiated it,” says Bennett.

Feelings that can not be rendered in words, those felt on the eve of Christmas, when a group of now 30 friends of different nationalities, we felt united in a celebration so important passed away from our families. As if by magic, during dinner, it started to snow! They rolled down huge snowflakes that in a short time have whitened the city, giving a wonderful feeling that even today I remember with emotion. At night, after dinner, we followed the Mass in a church not far from home (it was in English) and to 23: 00 we went to the Royal Albert Hall to follow the Christmas concert of the London Philharmonic.

Remembrance Day rejuvenated interest in recalling the war and military sacrifice, attracting thousands to ceremonies in cities large and small across the country. It remained a day to honour the fallen, but traditional services also witnessed occasional calls to remember the horror of war and to embrace peace. Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held at community cenotaphs and war memorials, or sometimes at schools or in other public places. Two minutes of silence, the playing of the Last Post, the recitation of In Flanders Fields, and the wearing of poppies quickly became associated with the ceremony.

Horse, mule or ox-drawn vehicles could go somewhat further. A stagecoach could cover more than 100 km. in a day, always depending on the state of the poor roads of the time. A simple downpour could make the best road into an impassible quagmire. On the other hand, the capacity of transport was limited since animal haulage didn't have the strength to pull heavy loads. By way of a solution to this inconvenience, tracks were lain in some parts of England, over which carts could roll more easily. This was the origin of the first railways which, normally used around mining exploitations, covered extremely short distances.

The video evidences the savings on taxiing time permitted by an optimization of the aircraft block departure times as provided in the local management concepts for departures used for the implementation of an ACDM (airport collaborative decision making).

To defend the Battle Hill's refuge of houses, 'Nekt and his warriors hoisted huge spiked logs up the palisade walls and fastened them with cedar ropes. When the war horn signaled an enemy attack, the logs were rolled down to crush the invaders.

Beautiful night views of Yokohama can be enjoyed at many scenic places such as the Yokohama Bay Bridge Sky Walk (a glass-enclosed walkway on the bridge that leads to an observation deck), Harbor View Park (a hill-top park near Yokohama Bay), Kishamichi Promenade (a former railroad route that runs over the canal in Yokohama Harbor), and Marine Tower (the tall lighthouse overlooking Yokohama Bay).

Robert Capa wrote that on D-Day, 1944, he paused to change film while under intense fire on Omaha Beach. “The empty camera trembled in my hands,” he wrote. “It was a new kind of fear shaking my body from toe to hair and twisting my face. The men around me lay motionless. Only the dead on the water line rolled in the waves. An LCI braved the fire and medics …poured from it…I stepped into the sea between two bodies…and suddenly I knew that I was running away. I tried to turn, but couldn’t face the beach.”

One of the hypotheses of the Cycling Death Review was that all cycling fatalities are preventable. This hypothesis held true in each and every death we reviewed. As a Chief Coroner’s Review, we by definition confined our analysis to fatalities. However, we recognize that cycling deaths are just the tip of the iceberg. In 2009, over 26,000 people in Ontario visited an Emergency Department for treatment of an injury sustained while cycling3. Undoubtedly, countless more were injured but did not require medical treatment. Each of these injuries represents a potential fatality – an incident where, had the situation unfolded slightly differently, a death might have occurred.
