Nobuo Kubota (1932, Vancouver, Canada) Ц artist, musician, performer. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Toronto, School of Architecture. He conducted numerous solo exhibitions of sculpture and installations at various galleries in Canada, including The Isaacs Gallery (Toronto), The Owens Gallery (New Brunswick), Workscene Gallery (Toronto), The Saw Gallery (Ottawa), The Kelowna Art Gallery (Kelowna). Since 1964 he has participated in group artistic exhibitions both in Canada and abroad, including the following: New Painters and Sculptors (Toronto, 1966), Canadian Sculpture Exhibition (Stratford, 1968), Ontario Now (Hamilton, 1976), Sound Sculpture (Toronto, 1978), Shikata Ga Nai (Hamilton Ц London Ц Burlington Ц Vancouver, 1987-89), Yellow Peril Reconsidered (Vancouver Ц Winnipeg Ц Toronto Ц Montreal Ц Halifax, 1990), Historia & Storie (Verona, 1994), Libretto Digitalis (Florence, 1997), Broadview (Weimar, 1998), Poesia Intermedia (Rome, 1998), Tribute To Dick Higgins (Budapest, 1999) and others. M. Snow and J. B. Mays, commenting on KubotaТs sound poetry productions, emphasise the obvious influence on them of various world sound practices Ц from Buddhist Chanting, Japanese (Noh drama) and Korean vocal traditions to the European avant-garde music and American jazz improvisation. He participated in a number of international festivals of contemporary art and sound poetry, collective sound-symposiums and concerts, including the ones held in the 1990s: Asian Heritage Festival (Toronto, 1995), Electronic Music Festival (Toronto, 1996), SiaPoesia/YesbePoetry (Bologna, 1997), УbobeobiФ, Internationales Festival der Lautpoesie (Berlin, 1998), Polysonneries Festival (Lyon, 1999), Nothern Lights Festival Boreal (Sudbury, 1999) and others. He contributed to numerous collaborative works and joint performances held with J. Kamevaar, R. Kyooka, M. Snow, P. Dutton, M. Sutherland and many others. Since 1975 till 1990 Kubota performed as a member of the free improvisation group ——ћ— (Toronto), touring about the cities of Canada, USA, Europe and Japan. As a member of the ——ћ— he participated in the festivals: Pro Musica Nova (Bremen, 1978), Festival at La Charteuese (Avignon, 1982), The Holland Festival (Amsterdam, 1985), The Du Maurier Jazz Festival (Toronto, 1990), New Music America (Montreal, 1990).
