L’entrée se trouve sur la partie occidentale de Motu Fara, un petit îlot au centre de la passe. En vous laissant glisser par le courant, vous traverserez une véritable vallée sous-marine puis un tombant sur lequel vous rencontrerez des nasons (aussi appelés poissons-licornes!), des chirurgiens, des vivaneaux bossus et des fusiliers. La plongée se termine sur une dune de sable couverte de têtes de corail et de nudibranches. Le site descend à un maximum de 18 mètres et convient à tous types de plongeurs.

Toutefois, leur extraordinaire diversité et l’existence de nombreuses espèces cryptiques soulèvent d’importantes difficultés d’ordre taxinomique. Nous présentons les résultats de travaux de barcoding moléculaire étalés sur huit années (2004-2011) des Microgastrinés, qui forment actuellement le groupe d’Hyménoptères parasitoïdes le mieux représenté dans le Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), volumineux site de stockage de codes à barres ADN et de gestion de données pour le programme International Barcoding of Life (iBOL). On y trouve des données sur plus de 20 000 spécimens provenant de 75 pays, dont 50 genres (90 % du total connu) et plus de 1 700 espèces (tel qu’indiqué par les Barcode Index Numbers et une MOTU [unité taxonomique opérationnelle moléculaire] à 2 %). Nous soulignons brièvement l’importance de cette base de données moléculaires et de ses informations collatérales pour les futures recherches axées sur : 1) la découverte d’espèces cryptiques et la description de nouveaux taxons; 2) l’estimation du nombre d’espèces dans le cadre d’inventaires de la biodiversité; 3) la clarification des limites génériques; 4) l’élaboration de programmes de lutte biologique; 5) la caractérisation moléculaire de la biologie et de l’écologie hôte-parasitoïde; 6) l’évaluation des changements touchant la répartition et la phénologie des espèces; 7) la collaboration aux échelles régionale, nationale et internationale. L’intégration des données de codage génétique aux données taxinomiques classiques à fondement morphologique, aux données sur les hôtes et aux autres informations disponibles contribuera à accroître considérablement la fiabilité de l’identification des Microgastrinés et à accélérer la réalisation des futures recherches consacrées à ce groupe de parasitoïdes.
