les zones représentatives sur le plan écologique;
areas of ecological representation
Grasslands National Park is part of a larger Canadian system of protected heritage areas. The goal of our national system is to protect representations of each of Canada's 39 natural regions. Grasslands National Park represents the Prairie Grasslands Natural Region of Canada. It is the only park of our 39 national parks that does so.

As discussed in section 1, Canada committed nationally and internationally to establish, by 2012, MPA networks comprising representative areas, as well as areas that protect ecologically significant habitats, species, and ecosystem components. Each of the Canadian authorities mandated to establish MPAs has different but complementary objectives for their designation (table 1). Without the necessary coordination and interaction among agencies working towards common ecological goals, there would be patchworks of individual MPAs instead of linked MPA networks, which is less effective from an ecological standpoint.

Protected areas are usually designated in order to set aside representative areas of all of the different ecosystem types that exist in an area.

In the 1990s, Canada was committed to having a representative network of terrestrial and freshwater areas across the country for all the reasons laid out. Canada got about one third of the way there. My wish would be that the network of representative high-conservation-value areas—well planned, with greater certainty for economic development in between—be completed for the other two thirds of the land and freshwater, and for our enormous marine shelf. At this point, the exercise hasn't even started. That is the smart way to go; complete that network on the basis that was set up in the 1990s.

area is a challenge because it cannot be measured directly. In order to determine the ecological integrity of an area, ecologists must identify, measure and interpret some indicators. Indicators must be identified at various scales from the landscape to the site. Road access and road density (e.g., the number of kilometres of roads in an area) may be suitable indicators of human access to a large area. The condition and trends of a specific wildlife population can be an indicator of the viability of an ecosystem on a regional or site-specific scale. The definition and use of measurable indicators is a difficult and complex task at all scales.

The sampling regime (Fig. 1) of AZMP is based on: (1) seasonal and/or opportunistic sampling along eleven sections (with individual stations spaced from 20 to 40 km apart) to obtain information on the variability of the physical environment for the whole northwest Atlantic region; (2) higher frequency temporal sampling (biological, chemical, and physical variables) at six accessible fixed sites to monitor the smaller time scale dynamics in representative areas; and (3) remote sensing of physical (SST) and biological (chlorophyll) variables to provide a broader spatial coverage and to increase our capacity to interpret ocean data (e.g., interpolation or synoptic capacity of site-specific field data), complemented by (4) data coming from other existing monitoring programs (e.g., Continuous Plankton Recorder) and other types of available data (e.g., meteorological data) that have been supplemented with oceanographic observations. In addition to the above, existing regional ecosystem trawl (groundfish) surveys and other ship-of-opportunity cruises acquire data over broad areas of the continental shelf and slope at a minimal increased cost for the monitoring program. Key AZMP variables include
