At first, advertising agencies representing corporate sponsors controlled the programs that appeared on television. Moving away from single sponsorship of the programs, advertisers gave up the right to license programs while reserving the right to censor objectionable materials. The television networks, principally CBS and NBC, negotiated with independent production companies for ownership of the programs in exchange for a slot in prime-time broadcasts. Texaco Star Theater hosted by Milton Berle dominated early television audiences. Then came the sitcom, of which I Love Lucy was a notable example. This comedy series starring Lucille Ball and her husband, Desi Arnaz, made effective use of television’s visual potential. Shows began to be taped, permitting reruns. After the quiz-show scandals of the mid 1950s, the networks turned to Hollywood for programming content. As U.S. commercial television became concentrated in three major networks, viewers wanting greater variety subscribed to cable-television services. In 1980, Ted Turner’s Cable News Network began broadcasting live news reports from around the world 24 hours a day. Since 1991, western-style television has come to the masses of Asia through satellite broadcasts and cable television. The STAR network reaches 38 countries with a combined population of 2.7 billion people.

Is Ratner suffering from penis envy? Or is he trying to option the book for some ill-conceived, giant-penis-based buddy comedy starring Willem Dafoe, Tommy Lee and the ghost of Milton Berle? Only time will tell.
"If you weren't rejoicing about the research that cleared up tap water's relation to a crazy penis defect, then I have uncovered a rockin' publication for the penis obsessed. TASCHEN just released The Big Penis Book, on June 25. TASCHEN, known for the last homage to a random body part The Big Book of Breasts, is proud to present this coffee table staple dedicated to the schlong. Dian Hanson, creator of the last "Big Book" installment, has put together over 300 pages of phallic photographs for your viewing pleasure. The photos are actually historic photos of huge man-o-wursts (I don't feel like historic should be in there, but they are, in fact, historic). Many of the photos were taken during the sexual revolution, a time when penis photography was at its prime. This is not your normal Playgirl issue, it's a small lesson in history. The "Big Book" doesn't only include photos, it has quick, but delightful, personality profiles about the male models and the obligatory factoids concerning the sexual revolution. For me, the penis has always been a bit off putting (especially, when it's uncut and flaccid...I think I just threw up a little typing that). Doesn't mean you shouldn't check it out!!! Useful Suggestion: Put this little goodie on the coffee table as a joke."— collegeOTR.com, Los Angeles, United States
"If we had a dollar for every random guy who professed to being in the new TASCHEN tome The Big Penis Book at the launch party in West Hollywood last week, then let's just say we would have enough to buy several of the phallic-shaped piñata's adorning the window display of local boutiques Alpha Male and Coco de Mer, both of which co-hosted the event. Photographers Ed Fox and David Hurles mingled with fans indulging in the occasional wiener served by near-naked staff as Alpha Male co-founder Christos Garkinos greeted guests at the door offering porn star name tags. Meanwhile director Brett Ratner had another agenda in mind: being the first in line to have his copy signed by world-famous porn star and Penis Book cover model Chad Hunt. It wasn't all testosterone, however, as in walked the lady of the hour, editor Dian Hanson (whose prior project with TASCHEN was the phenomenally successful Big Book of Breasts). Hanson went ahead and spilled the beans on her next collaborative effort with the publishing house: "It's a topic I know a lot about with a beautiful aesthetic: legs!" she cooed. 'Though it won't sell quite as well as this. Then again, nothing will ever sell as well as this.'— V Magazine, New York, USA
"Brett Ratner gets a lot of shit here at Defamer. We've called him "annoying," "a hack," even... gasp.. "a bad director." But one thing we won't do is say the guy doesn't appreciate fine literature. Why, according to Page Six, Ratner was the biggest star at an LA book signing the other night. Of course, that book was The Big Penis Book. And TASCHEN, the publisher, says it's "profusely illustrated with over 400 historic photos of spectacular male endowments. TASCHEN goes on to proclaim that "a big penis is undeniably compelling. Big shoulders, big lapels, and big hair may come and go, but the big penis never goes out of fashion. With those possessing more than 8 inches (20 cm) making up less than 2% of the world's population, this rare accessory will always fascinate." And Brett was indeed fascinated. Gossip maven Richard Johnson (a very penis-y name, by the way) says "the Hollywood director showed up at LA venue Alpha and bought five copies, which he got signed by the cover model, porn star Chad Hunt. But that's not all. Apparently, "the party was full of 'underwear-clad male waiters and porn stars;' and...'Brett was eating it up!' So what does all this mean? Is Ratner suffering from penis envy? Or is he trying to option the book for some ill-conceived, giant-penis-based buddy comedy starring Willem Dafoe, Tommy Lee and the ghost of Milton Berle? Only time will tell."— defamer.com, Los Angeles, Estados Unidos
