Ecrire au burin sur de l’or, de l’acier ou du platine n’est possible qu’après des années d’expérience. D’abord naît l’esquisse, tracée à la pointe sèche directement sur le fond de la Reverso. Le dessin est ensuite affiné avec le burin, approprié au style de la gravure. « L’écriture doit couler librement de la main, c’est uniquement de la sorte que l’on obtiendra de beaux caractères », peut-on lire dans un ancien manuel de gravure.

Gerhard Abstreiters Erkenntnisse werden heute in fast allen komplexen mikroelektronischen Schaltkreisen ausgenutzt und waren Basis seiner Erfindung eines Heterostruktur-Feldeffekt-Transistors, der z. B. als rauscharmer Vorverstärker in Satellitenantennen und mobilen Telefonen Anwendung findet. Das Gebiet der Halbleiter-Quantenpunkte hat er durch den ersten spektroskopischen Nachweis der diskreten Schalenstruktur der Elektronen und Exzitonen begründet und zur Blüte gebracht. Schwerpunkte neuerer Arbeiten liegen in möglichen Anwendungen von Spineigenschaften in Halbleitern, sowie der Realisierung von Hetero-Nanodrähten. Abstreiters Arbeitsgruppe gelang die Demonstration eines GaAs basierten Nanowire Lasers, der direkt auf Silizium aufgewachsen wurde. Seine vielfältigen Aktivitäten umfassen auch die Manipulation von DNA auf Goldoberflächen sowie die Entwicklung halbleiterbasierender Bauteile zur Anwendung in der Biosensorik und der molekularen Elektronik. Karyanya yang padat karya dan performatif berisikan bunyi alat-alat tukang perhiasan – palu dan pahat – yang digunakan untuk membuat pola untuk gelang emas. Sifat material yang digunakan karya seni tersebut – kawat tembaga yang ditanam di panel gesso, memunculkan patina dengan satu sisi yang mengkilap- menghapus garis-garis yang perlahan berubah seiring dengan waktu dan usia. Pengolahan obyek dan tindakan repetitif dalam menciptakan karya tersebut nyaris seperti aspek ‘meditatif’ dalam praktik seniman yang bersangkutan.

Le laboratoire du Dr Trifiro étudie depuis longtemps les mécanismes d'action des récepteurs stéroïdiens, des mutations dans les cellules germinales et somatiques des récepteurs androgéniques (RA) humains et les mutations de perte et de gain de fonction des RA dans les syndromes d'insensibilité aux androgènes et le cancer de la prostate respectivement . Ses autres intérêts comprennent les systèmes de réparation des mésappariements, les protéinopathies polyglutaminiques et les nouvelles thérapies pour le cancer de la prostate. Grâce à sa vaste expérience en biologie moléculaire et dans les techniques d'ingénierie de protéines recombinantes, couplée à une excellente compréhension du fonctionnement du récepteur, son laboratoire a conçu et s'est servi pour la première fois de protéines provenant de la réingénierie comme biocapteurs. À l'aide de glucokinases provenant de la réingénierie immobilisées sur des électrodes en or, le laboratoire du Dr Trifiro a, avec l'aide du Dr V. Chodavarapu (Département de génie électrique et informatique de l'Université McGill), mené des expériences visant à démontrer la validité du principe et fournir des renseignements sur le fonctionnement du premier biocapteur de glucose sans réactif. Ces capteurs constitueront la pierre angulaire en lien avec la conception d'un pancréas artificiel et seront utilisés pour contrôler les systèmes d'administration de l'insuline et du glucagon. Cette technologie peut être facilement adaptée pour produire d'autres biocapteurs.
