Gromady kuliste zawierają dziesiątki tysięcy bardzo wiekowych gwiazd, które powstały w tym samym okresie i z tej samej materii. Jednak czasem odnajdujemy w takich gromadach gwiazdy stosunkowo młode, zupełnie niepasujące do reszty. Powoduje to powstanie pytania czy gromady otwarte są naprawdę takimi starymi tworami, za jakie je uważamy.
