Contaminated water and poor hygiene are among the main causes of the still very high child mortality rate in many countries. This fight is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals the global community aims to achieve. in close cooperation with Otto (GmbH & Co. KG), Care Mozambique, Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG) with funds of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the local cotton company Plexus Ltd. the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) and its Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) initiative contribute to this goal with a new community project in Mozambique: Wells will be built to improve the water supply in remote cotton growing areas in Mozambique. A move that will directly benefit the women and girls in the villages: A better water supply through wells saves the female family members, who are traditionally responsible for fetching water, from making long and time-consuming journeys. This also provides girls with the opportunity to go to school, which they are often denied because of their responsibilities in the home. In addition, the quality of drinking water will greatly improve with the new wells. The construction of latrines and raising general awareness among the villagers for basic hygiene measures also contribute to the fact that an important factor of child mortality, namely diarrheal diseases, can be curbed. Given the currently very basic health care available in many areas in Mozambique these investments are essential for saving lives.

Healthcare is among the most urgent needs for the people who share the bonobo habitat. In most cases, remote rainforest communities are far from any modern medical facility. They have little to no access to any form of healthcare or even basic medicines. BCI, along with local partner Vie Sauvage, has developed the Bonobo Health Clinic program to provide essential medical care to the 8,000 people who live in 25 villages within the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve. The Kokolopori residents receive healthcare services from the clinic including treatment for malaria, dysentery, malnutrition, and other injuries and illnesses. In addition to offering basic medical care, the clinic conducts malaria awareness campaigns, performs nutritional assessments of mothers and young children, trains local women to become midwives and provides pre- and post-natal care to the women of Kokolopori.

Our humanitarian workers, aware of the risks in difficult security contexts, support children to get back on their feet, as in the difficult context of Iraq, where children have been through traumatizing experiences such as the indoctrination by the so-called Islamic state or by displacement. They help Rohingya refugee children, lost in the overcrowded camps of Kutupalong in Bangladesh, to find their families and provide medical assistance to malnourished children in an environment currently marked by monsoon rains. But they are also the only actors to protect children at the frontline in remote and newly liberated zones previously occupied by the terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

To this day, millions of people still have no access to vital and essential drugs. DIFAEM Pharmaceutical Services support the organization and establishment of central pharmacies in the respective countries. Wherever possible, drugs are procured locally or regionally. We support regular and qualified quality control of medicines and advise local project partners and development organizations in the establishment of local supply structures.

South Sudan suffers from heavy contamination by anti-personnel mines, anti-vehicle mines, and other explosive weapons, including cluster munitions. These explosive weapons were used regularly during the Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972 and 1983–2005). Central Equatoria State (CES) and Eastern Equatoria State (EES) have by far the most open hazards.

First, the thousands of troops in Kinshasa must be reined in, particularly the private guards of Kabila and Bemba, who are not part of the army’s regular command structure. Secondly, steps need to be taken to prevent hate speech and defamation in media outlets, which are often de facto allies of the candidates and have helped stoke violence in the capital. Lastly, weaknesses in the electoral process must be urgently corrected to make sure the run-off is fair. In the first round, lists of voters and polling stations were altered on the eve of elections, lessening the transparency of the process. Election monitors did not have the resources to deploy to remote areas, leaving thousands of polling stations without observers. Ballot collection was poorly planned, particularly in Kinshasa where any recount was nearly impossible.

A large part of his work is informed by the practice and diffusion of field recordings, and by the possibilities and implications of creating work for mobile listening. He has made extensive recordings in areas as diverse as the Brazilian Amazon (the Mamori Sound project currated by Francisco Lopez, 2006) Argentinian Patagonia (Centro Del Arte residency, 2011) as well as several locations in Europe and North America. His web-based project collecting many of these sonic geographies - Earmaps.com - is set for launch in fall 2013.

Reaching a higher altitude and being built on steeper slopes than many other terraces, the Ifugao complex of stone or mud walls and the careful carving of the natural contours of hills and mountains to make terraced pond fields, coupled with the development of intricate irrigation systems, harvesting water from the forests of the mountain tops, and an elaborate farming system, reflect a mastery of engineering that is appreciated to the present.

Starting in 1986, Enfants du Mékong participated in the humanitarian aid that helped the Khmer that had sought shelter from Pol Pot’s government in Thai refugee camps. In 1991, with the return of the refugees to Cambodia, Children of the Mekong opened the first sponsor programs in the northwest and organized technical training projects to ‘recycle’ ex-soldiers and give them the opportunity to start over. In 1993 was inaugurated the Sisophon centre, which welcomed orphans and distraught families. In 1997, the first sponsored Khmer children receive their baccalaureate and prepare to study at the university of Phnom Penh. A foster house for students is then created. Next will be the opening of the Banteay Chmar centre (2001), which offers training in weaving, followed by the Samrong centre built to manage more closely the sponsorships in the Northwest of the country. Children of the Mekong manages the sponsor programs directly, as well as the foster homes and tutoring programs. The Bamboo volunteers are in charge of keeping an eye on the school and family life of the sponsored children. The structure of Children of the Mekong in Cambodia is consists in 4 offices, that employs more than 20 Cambodian employees and over 30 teachers. Since 2005, a large number of programs have been put in place with local supervisors, which helps to reach out to struggling families in remote areas as well as lighten our structure. Amongst the 2723 children sponsored by Children of the Mekong in Cambodia, there are:
