Das Projekt für das Whitney war eine wunderbare Erfahrung, weil es wirklich darum geht, zur Architektur zu sprechen, eine große Wand anzuschauen und zu sehen, wo man ein bestimmtes Element platziert, wie weit entfernt von einander oder wie dicht zusammen die beiden Teile sein sollen. Und dann stellt man 45 Stühle darunter, die im Verhältnis zum Ort doch recht klein erscheinen. Der Ort gibt der Person, die kommt und sich hinsetzt, ein bewegendes Gefühl und das ist eine architektonische Idee, die ich sehr mag. Ich bin sehr katholisch aufgewachsen und die Architektur von Kirchen prägte sich schon früh, noch bevor ich überhaupt sprechen konnte, in meine Psyche ein. Es hat etwas, an solch einem Ort zu sein, besonders, wenn Gott ganz in deiner Nähe ist und du brav bist und er dich noch immer mag.

Entre autres, mais ce n’est vraiment pas tout, parce qu’on ne peut pas les prendre seulement sur le plan symbolique. Par exemple, aujourd’hui, même si l’Eglise a combattu jusqu’au bout la théorie de l’évolution et si les fondamentalistes américains ou juifs ou musulmans sont toujours créationnistes, la grande majorité des croyants prend la genèse dans sa dimension symbolique. On tente la même chose avec le déluge : purification/renaissance, préfiguration du baptême, etc. (Dieu dit pourtant clairement : « j’ai résolu de faire périr tous les hommes »). Mais dans Anathème c’est plus compliqué. D’une part, qu’elle qu’en soit la symbolique, ces événements et ces menaces exposent une figure de Dieu d’une extrême cruauté. D’autre part, si beaucoup de choses dans la Bible relèvent de la légende, d’autres sont parfaitement historiques. Par exemple la destruction du royaume de Samarie, puis du Royaume de Juda et de Jérusalem ainsi que la déportation à Babylone des survivants. Nous sommes là dans le réel, historiquement prouvé. Or, la Bible, et ce sont des textes retenus dans Anathème, présente explicitement toutes ces horreurs comme des punitions que Dieu inflige à son peuple. Et certes, c’est bien une des caractéristiques fondamentales des religions judéo-chrétiennes que celle d’un Dieu se manifestant réellement dans l’histoire et à travers elle. Si la destruction véritable de Jérusalem est voulue par Dieu, pourquoi l’extermination des Amalécites serait-elle à prendre exclusivement au 2ème degré ?

Der Spruch stammt von dem bronzenen Kessel, den ich für die fotografische Aufnahme ausgesucht hatte. Als Weihwasserkessel repräsentiert er einen Glauben an die Magie der Materie, denn der Kontakt mit dem gesegneten Wasser soll einen Segen übertragen. Es ist eine merkwürdige Koinzidenz, dass dieser Kessel vermutlich mitten im 2. Weltkrieg gekauft worden ist als das Museum Folkwang von den Nationalsozialisten um die verfemte moderne Kunst gebracht worden war.
